History of Brooches
Throughout history people have used many types of
fasteners to keep their clothes on. In the
beginning, skins, hides, and hand woven fabrics were
used for clothing. The garments were draped or
wrapped around the body and tied with leather straps
to keep in place. Fitted clothing was unheard of
and choices in fashion was nonexistent. However, as
the millennia passed and cultures developed, fashion
was born.
Much later In 1849, American Walter Hunt invented what he called the miracle fastener. We now know it as the safety pin. These pins, similar to the buttons of the time, were decorated with emblems, coats of arms, freshwater pearls, saphires and other gemstones set in desirable metal such is silver & copper . It's sheen and beauty was eyecatching and it quickly became a popular choice in the early 1900's. Over
the next century as fabrics, yokes, and cuts have
changed the brooch/Pin became an item of fashion
instead of the original fabric fastener. Today brooches are worn on suits or dresses accented with matching gemstones to add sparkle and glamour.
